MOMONECO
The MOMONECO-project provided an opportunity to compare Sunila and three other modernist masterpieces. The project included seminars and exhibitions held in 2003 of four European residential areas that represent the ideas and architecture of modernism. The following sites took part in this project:
Sunila, Finland: The pulp mill and residential area designed by Alvar Aalto in Kotka
Bellevue-Bellavista, Denmark: The recreational and residential area designed by Arne Jacobsen near Copenhagen
Bat’ovany-Partizánske Slovakia: The shoe factory and residential area designed by J. Voženílek, F. Fackenberg, M. Drofa and V. Karfík
Ivrea, Italy: The production and residential area of the Olivetti company
designed by the best Italian architects of the time.
Comparing the areas shows a similar set of values with personal variations local to the area
Sunila is at the same time a collaboration between five wood processing companies and a unique creation by a world renown architect. Bat’ovany-Partizánske is a local implementation of logical thinking and teamwork by a large international company. Ivrea is a community of production that was sculpted by multiple architects and has grown over the decades. All three of these factory communities are branded by the social thinking of their leaders. They share the idea of utilizing the wealth generated by the industry to form the best possible community in physical and social aspects. The details and interpretations have differences. This project was funded by the EU Culture 2000 program.
